home euthanasia
We perform the actual euthanasia in 2 steps:
1. Initially, we administer medication for pain, anxiety and sedation to help your pet relax. (We ask that you, a friend or family member gently hold your pet while the doctor administers this medication.)
If your pet is still interested in food this is a great time for ice cream, cheeseburgers, or anything they still love.
You can sit with your pet throughout the entire process including as they become comfortable, relaxed, sleepy and eventually fully anesthetized after about 5-10 minutes.
We can be wherever you and your pet are most comfortable. You determine who is present (people and/or pets) and the environment (quiet, music, etc.) whatever is most calming.
Will my pet feel this injection?
Your pet may have a brief feeling of discomfort at the injection site (just as we do as humans when we receive vaccinations by injection) followed by rapid and gentle anesthesia. Your pet may decide to move around, walk, vocalize or retreat to a place they feel safe after this injection- these are all common and normal behaviors. Please allow any reaction your pet feels they need at the time this is given. This medication will take 5-10 minutes to help your pet become anesthetized. Most pets keep their eyes open after receiving this medication.
2. Once your pet is completely anesthetized, a small area of fur may be shaved in order to deliver the next medication. The doctor will let you know where they will need to give this for your pet. The medication provides painless euthanasia and complete relief of pain and suffering within a few minutes. Most pet's eyes will remain open after passing away, this is normal.
If you’ve chosen cremation for your loved one, the doctor will step out to prepare the vehicle for transport. Your pet will be carried out to the vehicle using a stretcher or basket with a blanket. Be prepared to assist in carrying your pet outside if necessary. You are welcome to carry your pet outside and send them with any special toys, blankets or other items. If you've chosen a private cremation your pet's cremains will be ready to be picked up from the crematory in about 1 week.
