consultation
A consultation with a veterinarian that specializes in end-of-life care offers a comfortable, non-judgmental space to express concerns and ask specific questions. Discussing your pet's unique situation can help to appropriately assess quality of life, address disease challenges, better understand the natural dying process, and decide the best care for an animal that will be transitioning soon.
How to prepare
Find a quiet, comfortable space where you, your pet and the doctor can sit together. Gather your pet's recent/relevant medical records, medications, and a list of your specific questions and concerns.
What to expect
First, we will discuss your questions, concerns and expectations about your pet's end-of-life journey. We will go over your pet's home life and activities, recent/relevant medical history, medications and the doctor will examine your pet.
Together we will assess your pet's current quality of life using several forms of measurement. We will discuss what quality of life means, how to recognize a decline in quality of life, how to know when your pet is experiencing pain or discomfort, and ultimately when is the best time to say goodbye. The doctor will provide you with your options for moving forward, including recommendations for palliative care at home including supplements, medications, and/or other therapies. The doctor will explain potential expectations for each option and will help you form a plan for moving forward with care for your pet.
